### Massive Verizon Outage Leaves Thousands Without Connectivity Across the U.S.

A significant Verizon outage has triggered extensive connectivity issues for countless customers nationwide. This disruption has led to an influx of people searching online for answers, with the phrase "Why is my phone in SOS?" becoming particularly popular. Many Verizon subscribers have noted that their devices are now restricted to SOS service only.

As of 12:00 p.m. ET, DownDetector has registered over 100,000 outage reports linked to Verizon. A breakdown of these reports indicates that 50 percent concern mobile phone connectivity issues, 35 percent report no signal reception, and 14 percent are experiencing a complete blackout. The outage appears to be concentrated in several states, including New York, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, and North Carolina based on DownDetector's heat map.

These issues started accruing rapidly around 9:04 a.m. ET, according to a site monitoring the outage. Frustrated customers have been reaching out to Verizon Support on X, seeking help with the ongoing service interruptions. In response, Verizon acknowledged the problem on its X account: "We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue."

For those whose phones are stuck in SOS mode, it means the device cannot connect to a network but can still contact emergency services via satellite connectivity. This situation leverages Apple's "Emergency SOS via Satellite" feature, allowing users to access emergency services even in areas with poor coverage.

While the issue awaits resolution, affected customers might find a workaround through Wi-Fi calling. This method enables calls and texts on platforms like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and iMessage, bypassing the need for cellular service by connecting to a non-Verizon Wi-Fi network.
