### Central Nigeria Floods Result in Over 110 Fatalities
A devastating flood in central Nigeria has resulted in the deaths of at least 110 individuals, as torrential rains submerged communities in Niger State. Abullahi Baba-Arah, head of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (Nsema), reported that the heavy rain persisted for several hours, ultimately leading to catastrophic flooding.
The floodwaters engulfed and demolished more than 50 homes, displacing countless residents. The districts of Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa in Mokwa town were identified as the hardest-hit areas. Mokwa’s District Head, Muhammad Shaba Aliyu, expressed deep concern, highlighting that it has been 60 years since the community experienced flooding of this magnitude. "I beg the government to support us," pleaded Mr. Aliyu.
As search and rescue missions continue, authorities warn that many more residents remain in danger. The flood has left a significant number of people homeless, with local fisherman Danjuma Shaba stating to AFP news agency, "I don't have a house to sleep in. My house has already collapsed."
This alarming situation marks the onset of Nigeria's rainy season. Previous years have also seen severe impacts from flooding in the region. Heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding in northern Nigeria in 2024 resulted in numerous fatalities, the displacement of people, and extensive infrastructure damage. Similarly, in 2022, approximately 1.3 million Nigerians were forced to evacuate their homes due to severe flooding, which claimed over 600 lives.
The ongoing crisis underscores the urgent need for governmental assistance and long-term measures to mitigate the impact of future floods.
