The extent of the injury was highlighted by a photograph shared by Daniel Cormier towards the end of Saturday's pay-per-view broadcast. While the specific details of the injury remain unclear, the image showed Whittaker’s front bottom teeth brutally pushed back towards his throat, filling his mouth with blood.
The injury occurred during Whittaker's first-round submission loss to Chimaev in the co-main event at Eithad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. From the outset, Chimaev dominated the fight, dragging Whittaker to the ground and overwhelming him with a relentless assault. The fight concluded quickly, with Chimaev applying a face crank that forced Whittaker to tap out at 3:34 of the first round.
With this victory, Chimaev continues his unbeaten streak, improving his mixed martial arts record to 14-0, with 8-0 in the UFC. Meanwhile, Whittaker, who now holds a record of 27-8 in MMA and 17-6 in the UFC, must recover from his significant injuries.
