In a disappointing 4-1 defeat against the Detroit Tigers, the 2024 Chicago White Sox broke an infamous record, accumulating the most losses in a single season in Major League Baseball's modern era. This loss marked their 121st of the year, a historic low for the franchise.
The game against the Tigers saw Detroit take an early lead, scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Chicago's Zach DeLoach offered a brief spark, hitting his first career major league home run in the next half inning, cutting the gap to one. However, the Tigers quickly regained control in the seventh inning, sealing their victory and clinching their first playoff berth since 2014.
The White Sox’s season-long ineptitude now surpasses the Mets' previous modern-day record of 120 losses set in 1962. While Chicago's 2024 struggles are notable, they don't quite reach the depths of the overall record held by the 1899 Cleveland Spiders, who finished with a dismal 20-134 record.
The signs of a catastrophic season were evident early on as the White Sox managed only three wins in their first 25 games. Their performance spiraled further with a 14-game losing streak and a subsequent 21-game skid, tying the American League record for consecutive losses with the 1998 Baltimore Orioles.
Infielder Nicky Lopez, a lifelong White Sox fan, expressed his disappointment to MLB.com, stating, "It obviously sucks." The team's social media presence attempted to find humor amid the losses by posting sarcastic updates, drawing some engagement despite the dismal season. Their most recent post followed Friday night's record-setting loss, featuring a meme of the sad White Sox mascot and a list of things they would rather do than read comments.
With just 39 wins so far in 2024, the White Sox's season has been marked by historic futility. Despite a brief highlight with a sweep of the Angels earlier this week, the team faces two more games against the Tigers, with hopes of ending the season on a slightly higher note, but the damage has already been done.
