In a series of roster moves, the Chicago White Sox have officially announced the recall of outfielder Zach DeLoach as they deal with the injury of Eloy Jimenez. DeLoach's promotion to the big leagues comes as Jimenez lands on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
The decision to bring up DeLoach was reported earlier today, following the news of Jimenez's injury. It is expected that Jimenez's stint on the injured list will be a lengthy one, as further evaluation is set to take place. The frequently injured slugger has had previous encounters with the IL, and this latest setback points towards another extended absence.
Zach DeLoach, a 25-year-old left-handed hitter, was originally a second-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in 2020. He joined the White Sox organization through a trade involving Gregory Santos during the offseason. DeLoach currently ranks 29th on MLB.com's White Sox top-30 prospect list, having been 16th at Baseball America prior to the season.
In his time with the Triple-A Charlotte Knights this year, DeLoach has posted a slash line of .263/.358/.351 with two home runs and eight stolen bases in 159 plate appearances. Although these numbers represent a drop-off from his impressive performance last year, where he recorded a .286/.387/.481 slash line in 623 Triple-A plate appearances, DeLoach has shown improved plate discipline with a decrease in his strikeout rate and a solid 11.9% walk rate.
DeLoach's versatility in the outfield is evident as he has experience playing all three positions. While MLB.com's scouting report rates his arm as average, Baseball America believes he is best-suited for left field. Despite his power and speed not receiving top grades, DeLoach brings an on-base percentage-focused approach at the plate. In order to establish himself as an everyday option, he may need to further develop his power, fielding, or speed, particularly against left-handed pitching, where he has displayed inconsistency.
With DeLoach's addition, the White Sox now have a total of six outfield options, including Andrew Benintendi, Tommy Pham, Gavin Sheets, Dominic Fletcher, and Corey Julks. Benintendi, who has struggled offensively this season, and Sheets, who could see more playing time at designated hitter or first base in Jimenez's absence, may face changes in their roles.
The White Sox will hope that DeLoach's strong plate discipline and potential for improvement can help provide stability to their outfield depth as they navigate the challenges posed by injuries.
