The Chicago White Sox have made some roster moves, announcing the selection of catcher Chuckie Robinson's contract. In order to make room for Robinson on the 40-man roster, outfielder Duke Ellis has been designated for assignment.

Robinson, 29, signed a minor league deal with the White Sox last December. Although his performance in Triple-A has been underwhelming this year, hitting just .235/.288/.386 with a 24.4% strikeout rate in 41 games, the White Sox have decided to give him a chance at the major league level. This marks Robinson's first time on a 40-man roster since 2022 when he played for the Cincinnati Reds.

With the White Sox, Robinson will serve as a backup catcher behind the current duo of Martin Maldonado and Korey Lee. His ability to be optioned to Triple-A makes him a valuable asset in case of any injuries to the main catchers.

By adding Robinson to the 40-man roster, the White Sox ensure that he remains within the organization and bypass any potential opt-outs in his minor league deal. This move solidifies Robinson's place with the team and gives the White Sox more depth at the catcher position.

On the other hand, outfielder Duke Ellis, who was recently selected onto the club's roster, is now designated for assignment. Ellis, 26, was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 26th round in 2017 but did not sign. He later joined the White Sox as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and made his professional debut the following year.

During his time in the minors, Ellis struggled with his batting performance, posting a slash line of just .241/.328/.333 over four seasons. However, his lightning-fast speed earned him a spot in the major leagues, where the White Sox utilized him primarily as a pinch runner. Ellis managed to steal four bases in four attempts during his brief time in Chicago.

The White Sox now have one week to trade Ellis or attempt to pass him through waivers. Given his lackluster offensive ability, it is uncertain if other teams will claim him, providing the White Sox with the opportunity to outright him to the minor leagues.

It remains to be seen how these roster moves will pan out for the White Sox. The addition of Chuckie Robinson provides them with a reliable option at catcher, while Duke Ellis may catch the attention of teams looking for a speedy pinch runner and defensive replacement on their bench. The White Sox will have to make strategic decisions in order to strengthen their roster for the upcoming games.
