The White House has expressed strong concern over a potential Israeli military operation in Rafah, labeling it a "disaster" that would jeopardize the safety of Palestinian refugees in the city. The warning came from US National Security spokesperson John Kirby, who emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, particularly those who have been caught in the crossfire of the conflict. Kirby stressed that while the US supports Israel in combating Hamas, any operation must be carried out with the utmost consideration for civilian lives.
The US has called on Israel to present a credible plan to ensure the safety of refugees in Rafah, as concerns mount over reports that Hamas fighters are using civilians as human shields. Kirby emphasized that any operation lacking proper safeguards for civilians would not receive US support.
The urgency of the situation in Rafah stems from the recent rescue of two hostages, Fernando Marman and Luis Norbeto Har, who were kidnapped by Hamas terrorists on October 7. The hostages were successfully rescued from a heavily guarded building in Rafah, shedding light on Hamas' continued military presence in the area. Hamas Deputy Chairman Khalil al-Hayya confirmed the group's military capabilities in Rafah in an interview with Al Jazeera, raising further concerns about the potential risks associated with an Israeli military operation in the region.
International condemnation of IDF operations in Rafah has been widespread, with 26 out of 27 European Union countries voting against such actions. The White House's stance underscores the delicate balance between combating terrorist threats and safeguarding civilian lives in conflict zones like Rafah.
