Mountaineers Lose Extra-Inning Thriller to Marshall

In a nail-biting game, the West Virginia University baseball team suffered a tough 3-2 defeat to Marshall in 11 innings at Jack Cook Field. The Mountaineers now hold a 19-13 record, while the Thundering Herd improve to 12-19.

The game started off scoreless, but it was WVU's Hussey who broke the deadlock with a powerful opposite-field home run, marking his eighth of the season. This notable achievement brought Hussey's career home run total to 33, just two shy of the West Virginia program record.

Marshall managed to tie the game in the sixth inning, but the Mountaineers swiftly regained the lead in the seventh when Sauve delivered an RBI single. However, in the bottom of the ninth, an unearned run for Marshall evened the score, sending the game into extra innings.

In the 11th inning, West Virginia had a golden opportunity to take control as they put the first two runners on base. However, Marshall's strong defense executed a double play on a pickoff, thwarting the Mountaineers' chances. The game reached its climax in the bottom of the 11th, as the Thundering Herd walked it off with a decisive RBI single from Caden Keiser.

Despite the loss, West Virginia's pitching was commendable, with an exceptional performance from [Pitcher]. In 1.1 innings on the mound, [Pitcher] delivered a scoreless outing and struck out two Marshall batters.

The Mountaineers will now return home to Kendrick Family Ballpark, where they will face off against the formidable No. 17 UCF team. The opening pitch for Friday's game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
