The Washington Commanders have decided to remove the controversial memorial installation dedicated to the late safety Sean Taylor from their Landover stadium. Acknowledging that the previous installation "fell short" in honoring one of their franchise's most iconic players, the team is now working closely with the Taylor family on a new plan that includes the unveiling of a statue.

In a statement released on Saturday, the team expressed their commitment to honoring Taylor's legacy and impact on the organization, fanbase, and community. The Commanders acknowledged that the original installation, unveiled in November 2022, had received significant criticism. While members of Taylor's family, including his daughter Jackie, approved of the display, others quickly pointed out its flaws. These included the use of a Nike jersey and the absence of Taylor's signature taping on the face mask.

To address these concerns, the Commanders made alterations to the installation. However, the tribute still drew criticism and the team's new ownership group, led by Josh Harris, took note. Harris and his partners have invested over $75 million in Commanders Stadium for repairs and upgrades. As part of these efforts, the team plans to unveil a new premium suite named the "Tunnel Club," offering 150 season ticket holders access to an exclusive area where players travel to and from the field and locker room.

Alongside the stadium upgrades, the team is now focused on creating a fitting tribute to Sean Taylor. The new plan will include the construction of a statue in his honor, which will be unveiled at a later date. One person with knowledge of the team's plans has mentioned that the statue will have the flexibility to be moved to the Commanders' future stadium.

Jackie Taylor, expressing her gratitude towards the Commanders' commitment to keeping her father's legacy alive, stated in a team-shared statement, "I'm thankful for Josh Harris and the Commanders family for their continued commitment to keep my dad's legacy alive. I look forward to sharing plans in the future and learning more about my dad through this process. I'm forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support from this special fan base. I'm filled with gratitude to know that my dad will forever be a part of the burgundy and gold family."

The Commanders' dedication to honoring their legends in a first-class manner is reflected in their extensive investment in the stadium, with upgrades including the addition of the 1932 Club, more terrace tables, touchless security at entry gates, a new sound system and lighting, touchless food and beverage markets, resurfaced parking lots, and updated furnishings and carpet on the club level.

As fans eagerly await the unveiling of the new statue, the Washington Commanders are determined to create a tribute that truly celebrates the enduring legacy of Sean Taylor.
