**Washington Commanders Acquire CB Marshon Lattimore From New Orleans Saints**
The Washington Commanders have strengthened their defense with the acquisition of cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints. The deal, which was announced on Tuesday, also includes a 2025 fifth-round pick for the Commanders, while the Saints will receive a 2025 third, fourth, and sixth-round picks.
Lattimore, a seasoned player with eight years in the NFL, has been a pivotal figure for the Saints since being drafted 11th overall in 2017. Over his career, he has earned four Pro Bowl selections and has defended 88 passes, placing him fifth in that category over the same period. Joining the Commanders, Lattimore, at 28, aims to bolster a defense that currently ranks 26th in overall defensive DVOA and 17th in defensive passing DVOA, according to FTN. Lattimore's ability to limit completions to just 42.9 percent of targets last season with the Saints could prove vital for Washington’s defensive strategy.
The decision to trade for Lattimore reflects a shift in Washington’s approach under General Manager Adam Peters. Initially planning for long-term development with a focus on draft picks, the Commanders' unexpected rise as an NFC contender has prompted more immediate strategic moves. The team’s cornerback lineup, including Benjamin St-Juste, Mike Sainristil, Noah Igbinoghene, and the underperforming Emmanuel Forbes, indicated a pressing need for reinforcement.
Forbes, picked in the first round in 2023, has struggled significantly, prompting the Commanders to gauge trade interest. Veteran cornerback Michael Davis also faced setbacks and was excluded from the rotation following a challenging game against the New York Giants in Week 2. This urgency to enhance the cornerback position midseason coincides with a competitive NFC landscape, where only the 7-1 Detroit Lions currently outperform Washington.
Financially, acquiring Lattimore involves accommodating his $16 million salaries for 2025 and 2026 under his existing five-year, $97.6 million contract extension. Although there is no guaranteed money remaining, it is likely his management will seek a contract revision to mitigate his substantial salary cap hit, currently projected at $31.66 million for 2025.
On the Saints' side, the move may indicate a strategic shift, especially considering their struggles without key players like Paulson Adebo due to injury. The substantial dead money impact from Lattimore’s contract, amounting to $31.7 million in 2025, could signal a broader initiative to reassess and possibly rebuild their roster framework. Such changes follow the recent firing of head coach Dennis Allen, suggesting a potential overhaul in team strategy and management.
