Volunteer Firefighter Killed in Loudoun County House Explosion

A tragic incident unfolded in Loudoun County on February 16, as volunteer firefighter Trevor Brown, 45, lost his life while responding to a gas leak in the Sugarland Run area. The explosion also injured 10 other firefighters and two civilians at the scene on Silver Ridge Road in the Seneca Ridge neighborhood.
The blast occurred following the dispatch of units from the Sterling station to the location, where they discovered a leak in a 500-gallon propane tank. Despite the efforts of first responders, the explosion led to multiple maydays and trapped firefighters inside the residence, prompting additional assistance from various fire stations.
Nine of the injured firefighters were from Loudoun, while one was from Fairfax County, with four still hospitalized as of February 17, but expected to survive their injuries. The two civilians who were injured had initially placed the emergency 911 call and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The Loudoun County Fire and Rescue Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the explosion, which is believed to be an isolated incident with no ongoing danger to the community. Assistant Chief James Williams of the Combined Fire and Rescue System delivered the heartbreaking news at a press conference and highlighted the need for support and unity within the team during such challenging times.
The community is deeply saddened by the loss of one of its first responders and the injured individuals, and efforts are being made to support the affected families and the broader community during this difficult period. Washington Gas is cooperating in the investigation, pledging assistance as the incident is reviewed and the integrity of the gas system in the area is verified.
