The United States has announced its intention to block a new resolution set to be presented at the United Nations calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The resolution, proposed by Algeria, seeks to secure a ceasefire and the unconditional release of hostages. However, the US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the resolution would not be adopted as it could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts mediated by Qatar and Egypt.

The talks between Israel and Hamas have been discussing a potential weekslong truce that would include the exchange of captives held in Gaza for prisoners in Israeli jails, as well as increased humanitarian aid for Gaza. However, setbacks arose when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Hamas's demands as "ludicrous", leading to doubts about the progress of the negotiations.

The US has historically supported Israel with its veto power at the UN Security Council, including instances during the current conflict. A previous ceasefire resolution presented by the United Arab Emirates was vetoed by the US in early December. The new proposal by Algeria comes amid concerns of a potential ground invasion by Israel in Rafah, a region in southern Gaza with a significant refugee population. Aid agencies and the UN have warned of catastrophic consequences if such an invasion occurs.
