In an effort to address the critical humanitarian situation in Gaza caused by the ongoing conflict with Hamas, the US military is embarking on a challenging mission to construct a floating pier and causeway to deliver essential aid to the region. According to Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Patrick Ryder, the construction and full operationalization of the pier is expected to take at least one month, if not longer.
The complex nature of the project means that up to 1,000 US military personnel will be required to complete the task. This initiative is the second extraordinary measure announced by the Biden administration in less than a week, as the international community grows increasingly frustrated with the Israeli government's failure to recognize the urgency of the humanitarian crisis.
The floating pier will serve as an integral part of a maritime corridor which aims to deliver assistance directly to Gaza. Several nations including the US, the European Commission, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, and the UK have been collaborating on this effort. Notably, Qatar has pledged $60 million to support the maritime corridor initiative.
The US military will be responsible for the construction and operation of the floating pier, which will enable ships to offload aid to Gaza. Additionally, they will create a causeway to transport the aid from the pier to the enclave. The construction process will utilize the military's Joint Logistics Over the Shore capability, which involves cargo offloading in areas without fixed port facilities.
Once operational, the floating pier has the potential to provide up to 2 million meals per day to the people of Gaza, offering a significant lifeline for the diverse needs of the population. However, it is important to note that US military personnel will not be directly involved in transporting the aid into Gaza. The causeway will be anchored onto the shore by regional partners in Gaza who will handle the distribution process.
The establishment of a temporary pier was announced by President Joe Biden during his State of the Union address, showcasing the administration's commitment to addressing the pressing issues in Gaza. This move follows the recent US air-drops of meals into the region, which, despite providing some relief, are insufficient to meet the needs of over 2 million Palestinians.
Though the plan for the floating dock is taking shape, there remain challenges to be addressed. The US is currently determining who will receive and distribute the aid within Gaza since the White House has ruled out US boots on the ground. It is expected that local Palestinians under UN direction will be responsible for the distribution process.
As the project progresses, all ships intending to utilize the floating pier will undergo thorough security screenings. Additionally, discussions are ongoing with various organizations to explore potential collaborations to support the initiative.
The deployment of the US military to construct a floating pier demonstrates a collective effort to alleviate the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza. As the maritime corridor initiative gains momentum, it represents a critical pathway for delivering aid to the region, complementing ongoing efforts to open land crossings and increase relief efforts.
