MIAMI, FLORIDA - UrbanLink, a pioneering advanced air mobility (AAM) operator, has announced a firm order of 20 Lilium Jets from Lilium N.V., a global leader in Regional Air Mobility (RAM). The purchase agreement, which includes scheduled pre-delivery payments, also grants UrbanLink an option to acquire an additional 20 jets, cementing their commitment to integrating electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into their fleet.
This partnership between UrbanLink and Lilium is not only a significant milestone in aviation but also marks the first instance of an American airline fully embracing eVTOL technology. UrbanLink plans to commence operations by establishing a regional network connecting cities in South Florida, utilizing the state's network of vertiports that have been developed over the past five years.
Led by experienced airline executive Ed Wegel, UrbanLink aims to revolutionize urban transportation by offering sustainable regional connectivity in South Florida. The Lilium Jet, with its exceptional cabin design, range, capacity, and cost-effectiveness, was the optimal choice for their operations after a thorough evaluation of various manufacturers.
Sebastien Borel, Lilium's Chief Commercial Officer, expressed pride in UrbanLink's selection of the Lilium Jet for their network, emphasizing the significance of this order for the commercialization of eVTOLs in the United States. He noted that UrbanLink's purchase of eVTOL aircraft, without a financial stake in the manufacturer, demonstrates the maturity of the eVTOL market and growing demand for aircraft that can connect cities.
Assembly of the first Lilium Jet began at the end of last year, with the first piloted flight test scheduled to take place in late 2024. The service launch for UrbanLink's eVTOL operations in South Florida is anticipated to occur in 2026, connecting major cities such as Miami, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and extending seamlessly to Marco Island.
With UrbanLink leading the way, the integration of eVTOL aircraft into commercial airline fleets marks a critical step towards the wider adoption of AAM in the United States. As the partnership with Lilium propels UrbanLink's vision for regional air mobility, it showcases the immense potential for eVTOLs to transform urban transportation and enhance connectivity within and between cities.
This firm order of 20 Lilium Jets, alongside the option for additional aircraft, underscores the growing confidence in eVTOL technology and reinforces Lilium's position as a frontrunner in the field of electric aviation. As the industry continues to make strides towards more sustainable and efficient air transportation, this collaboration sets a precedent for future integrations of eVTOL aircraft into commercial airline fleets globally.
