In a surprising turn of events, the United States men's national team (USMNT) has bid farewell to head coach Gregg Berhalter, sources confirm. Berhalter, who was appointed in 2018, shortly after the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup, led the USMNT to a successful comeback by securing their spot in the round of 16 in the tournament. However, recent struggles have ultimately led to the decision for a change in leadership.

Despite winning the Concacaf Nations League title earlier this year, the team has faced challenges under Berhalter's guidance. A dramatic 95th-minute own goal by Jamaica spared the USMNT's elimination in the Nations League semis. Additionally, defeats against Trinidad, Panama in the Copa América, a loss to Germany in a friendly match, and a humbling defeat against Colombia have raised concerns about the team's performance.

The final blow came as the USMNT failed to advance from the group stage in the Copa América, marking the first time since 2007 that they have fallen short of reaching the quarterfinals in a major tournament. This disappointing outcome has led to the decision to part ways with Berhalter as the head coach.

During his tenure, Berhalter achieved notable success, accumulating 44 wins, 15 losses, and 13 ties. It is worth mentioning that he holds the highest winning percentage of any permanent USMNT coach. However, these accomplishments did not guarantee his position in the long run.

As of now, there is no information available regarding Berhalter's successor. However, U.S. Soccer is expected to name a new coach before the team's next match, a friendly game against Copa América semifinalist Canada on September 7th. The federation has not made any official comments on the matter.

The decision to part ways with Berhalter signals the USMNT's determination to address their recent struggles and pursue a new direction under fresh leadership. Only time will tell how this coaching change will impact the team's performance in future tournaments and competitions.
