Southern Brooklyn and parts of Staten Island were surprised by heavy snowfall on Saturday morning, with Coney Island recording nearly 10 inches of snow overnight, according to the National Weather Service. Parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island saw upwards of seven inches of snow, far exceeding the initial two to four inches that were forecasted for the New York City metropolitan area.

As the city woke up to unexpected winter weather, the National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for all five boroughs on Friday. JFK Airport in Queens also saw a higher amount of snow than anticipated, with just over six inches by Saturday morning. Meanwhile, Central Park in Manhattan experienced snow accumulations in line with predictions.

The city's Sanitation Department worked tirelessly to clear the snow, with thousands of workers making sure every highway, street, and bike lane was salted and plowed multiple times. The Adams administration issued a citywide travel advisory on Friday into Saturday, as parts of Staten Island and Brooklyn received seven inches of snow, contrasting sharply with the previously expected one to two inches.

In Rockland County, a National Weather Service site reported an inch and a half of snow on Saturday morning, while Long Island, Westchester County, and northeast New Jersey remained closer to the forecasted snow amounts.

Overall, the unexpected snowfall in southern Brooklyn and Staten Island led to significant accumulations, catching residents and city services off-guard.
