In a shocking turn of events, a scheduled fight between William Gomis and Jean Silva at UFC 301 has been cancelled after Gomis collapsed during the official weigh-ins. The incident took place at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, just a day before the highly anticipated event.
Gomis, with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses in MMA, struggled to make his way to the scale on Friday. The fighter, wearing casual attire, stepped on the scale and weighed in at 143 pounds, three pounds below the non-title featherweight limit. However, his condition rapidly deteriorated as he had to be assisted off the scale and reportedly vomited just before weighing in.
His severe physical distress prompted officials to cancel the fight shortly after the weigh-ins. MMA Junkie, a reliable news source, confirmed the cancellation with a source familiar with the situation in Brazil. The UFC, however, has not issued an official statement on the matter.
Gomis, who has been undefeated since 2016, had been looking forward to his return to the cage after a successful run in his first three UFC fights. Notably, he secured a third-round body kick knockout against Yanis Ghemmouri last September. Unfortunately, this is the second time Gomis has had to withdraw from a fight, as he also pulled out of a bout against Melsik Baghdasaryan in February.
It remains uncertain if the UFC will attempt to reschedule the fight between Gomis and Silva, who was set to compete in front of his home fans for the first time in the organization. The UFC 301 event is scheduled to take place on Saturday and will be broadcast on Pay-per-view, ESPN, and ESPN+.
