In an exciting showdown at the Stade de Marseille in Marseille, France, the U.S. Olympic Men's Soccer Team is ready to take on New Zealand in their second match of the 2024 Olympic Men's Soccer Tournament. The match is set to kick off at 1 p.m. ET and will be televised on USA Network, Telemundo, and Peacock.

Head coach Marko Mitrović has decided to deploy the same starting XI that played against France in their opening match. The lineup includes Patrick Schulte as the goalkeeper, Nathan Harriel, Walker Zimmerman, John Tolkin, Gianluca Busio, Kevin Paredes, Tanner Tessmann as captain, Paxten Aaronson, Miles Robinson, Duncan McGuire, and Djordje Mihailovic.

The substitutes for the U.S. team are Gaga Slonina, Maximilian Dietz, Griffin Yow, Taylor Booth, Benjamin Cremaschi, Jack McGlynn, and Caleb Wiley. Slonina and Cremaschi are the only two players who are yet to make their Olympic debut.

The Olympic Men's Soccer Tournament rules dictate that the players must be under the age of 23, with an exception for three overage players. The U.S. team has three overage players starting in tonight's match: Djordje Mihailovic (25 years old), Miles Robinson (27), and Walker Zimmerman (31).

Walker Zimmerman, with 42 caps, is the fifth-most experienced player in the U.S. team at the senior level since the overage player rule was introduced in 1996. The most experienced players in the team are Jeff Agoos (101 caps), Brian McBride (95), Alexi Lalas (69), and Brad Friedel (66).

Tanner Tessmann will once again take on the role of captain, marking his sixth time leading the team in this Olympic cycle. He has captained the team in every match since November 18, 2023.

It is worth noting that all the players in the starting XI have either played in Major League Soccer (MLS) or developed in an MLS academy. Some players have also spent time with other MLS or MLS Next clubs, such as Philadelphia Union, Sporting Kansas City, Chargers SC, Chicago Fire FC, CF Montreal, D.C. United, Bethesda SC, Atlanta United FC, FC Greater Boston Bolts, FC Dallas, and LAFC.

Defenders Miles Robinson and Walker Zimmerman have played together in central defense ten times for both the senior USMNT and the U.S. Olympic Men's Soccer Team, with a record of seven wins, two losses, and one draw. Their first appearance together at the Olympic level was in the game against France.

In the midfield, Gianluca Busio and Tanner Tessmann, who also play together for Venezia in Italy, will provide a strong partnership. The duo helped the club secure promotion to Serie A last season and have started together in five out of the eight matches in this Olympic cycle. They are the second and third players based in Italy to represent the U.S. Men at the Olympics, following in the footsteps of Danny Szetala.

Some interesting facts about the players include Tanner Tessmann being the first U.S. Olympic Men's Soccer player from Alabama, while Duncan McGuire and Gianluca Busio are the second representatives from Nebraska and North Carolina, respectively. They join Aage Brix and Eddie Pope as the only players from their respective states to have competed in Olympic soccer.

This match against New Zealand will mark the first meeting between the U.S. and New Zealand at the Olympic Games. The U.S. team has a record of 4 wins, 4 losses, and 5 draws in the group stage since the Under-23 rule was introduced in 1992.
