The U.S. Navy, along with coalition forces, successfully intercepted and destroyed 28 drones launched by Yemen's Houthis in the Red Sea, following a large-scale attack that threatened American vessels. The incident occurred between the early morning hours of 4 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. local time, according to a statement by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
CENTCOM confirmed that 15 one-way attack drones were shot down by U.S. Navy vessels and aircraft, as well as coalition ships. The drones, described as a threat by CENTCOM, were launched by "Houthi terrorists" and posed an imminent danger. There were no reports of damage resulting from these attacks.
The Houthis, an Iranian-allied group that has held control over northern Yemen and the capital city of Sanaa since 2014, claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group stated that their targeting was aimed at pressuring Israel to cease its war in Gaza. However, the U.S. military has stated that the Houthis' choice of targets is often unrelated to the ongoing conflict that began with Hamas attacks on southern Israel on October 7.
One of the recent targets of the Houthi attack was the Singapore-flagged bulk carrier Propel Fortune. Fortunately, none of the missiles fired hit the vessel, and no injuries or damages were reported.
Houthi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree addressed the recent events in a Telegram post, confirming that both the attack on the American warships and the targeting of the bulk carrier were "two specific military operations." He emphasized his group's support for the Palestinian people and their commitment to continue military operations in the Red and Arab Seas until the aggression ceases and the blockade on the Gaza Strip is lifted.
The U.S. military statement posted to X highlighted the successful collaboration between U.S. Navy vessels, aircraft, and coalition forces in neutralizing the threat posed by the Houthi drones. The CENTCOM update provided additional details on the timeline and outcomes of the engagements.
The incident showcases the ongoing tensions in the region and the importance of safeguarding American vessels from potential threats. The U.S. Navy's swift response and successful defense against the Houthi drone attacks demonstrate the military's capability to protect its interests and allies in the area.
