In preparation for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, U.S. Men's Olympic Soccer Team head coach Marko Mitrović has called 25 players to a training camp in Kansas City, Kan. The team will face Japan on Tuesday, June 11 at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. in their final match before the Olympic roster is selected.
The return of the U.S. Men's Olympic Team to the Games after a 16-year absence is an exciting prospect, providing some of the nation's top young talent the opportunity to compete against elite opposition on the world stage. The Olympic roster is restricted to players under the age of 23, with three overage players allowed.
Mitrović has chosen defender Walker Zimmerman as the overage player for the team. Zimmerman, with 42 senior international caps, brings valuable experience to the squad. He was part of the USMNT roster at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, appearing in all four matches.
The roster features a total of 19 players who have been capped by the full USMNT, including midfielder Gianluca Busio who leads the group with 13 senior international appearances.
The selected players come from a variety of clubs, with 10 from Major League Soccer and others from clubs in Belgium, England, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Mexico, and the Netherlands. Notably, 12 of the 13 players currently playing internationally had previously spent time in MLS academies before moving overseas.
Several players have returned to the National Team picture after recovering from injuries. Center back Jalen Neal, who played a key role during the USMNT's 2023 Gold Cup run, missed the end of last season's MLS campaign and the start of this year's due to injury, but is now ready to join the Men's Olympic Team. Midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi and forward Taylor Booth have also overcome injuries and are back in the squad.
The U.S. qualified for the 2024 Olympics by dominating the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Honduras. Forward Paxten Aaronson emerged as the tournament's standout player, winning the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot with seven goals. Neal, Cade Cowell, Jack McGlynn, and Rokas Pukstas also represented the U.S. at the competition.
The upcoming training camp and match against Japan will be crucial as Mitrović and his coaching staff assess the final group of players before selecting the Olympic roster. Fans can purchase tickets to watch the match at Children's Mercy Park, and the game will also be streamed, with further details to be confirmed.
With the blend of experienced senior players and promising young talents, the U.S. Men's Olympic Soccer Team aims to make a strong impact at the 2024 Summer Olympics and showcase the nation's growing prowess on the global soccer stage.
