In a tragic incident that shocked the residents of New York City, two teenagers have been arrested after the discovery of a woman's body in a duffel bag in an apartment last week. The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Nadia Vitel, who had visited her late mother's vacant apartment in Manhattan earlier this month.

According to law enforcement sources, 19-year-old Halley Tejada and a 16-year-old minor were unlawfully occupying the apartment where Vitel's lifeless body was found on March 14, during a wellness check at the Kips Bay apartment. The New York City Chief Medical Examiner's Office determined that her cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.

Investigators reviewing surveillance footage discovered Vitel's movements inside the apartment building on March 10, along with footage of the teenagers entering the building shortly thereafter. Additionally, items belonging to Vitel were found in the building's garbage receptacle area.

Law enforcement sources also revealed that Tejada and the 16-year-old were captured leaving the building on March 12, allegedly having stolen Vitel's car. They drove across state lines to New Jersey and were eventually involved in a car crash in Lower Paxton Township, Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force in York, Pennsylvania was instrumental in apprehending the teenagers following the crash. The specific charges against the two teenagers have not been disclosed at this time, and it remains unclear if they have obtained legal representation.

The shocking incident has left the community in mourning and has raised questions about the safety of vacant properties in New York City. As the investigation continues, authorities will work to establish a clearer timeline of events and determine the motive behind this heinous crime.

The tragic death of Nadia Vitel serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining security in empty residences and showcasing vigilance in our communities.
