Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been noticeably absent from the team's voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) as discussions surrounding his contract continue. Sources close to the situation have revealed that Tagovailoa has skipped the majority of offseason work since the Dolphins reported back in April.

Tagovailoa, who was selected as the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is currently set to play the 2024 season on his fifth-year option, which amounts to $23.171 million. However, the young quarterback is vying for a long-term contract extension that would reflect the going rate for franchise quarterbacks in the league, which is around $50 million per year.

The absence of Tagovailoa, who made his first Pro Bowl last season, is believed to be a strategic move to leverage a new deal with the team. While the Dolphins have the option to use the franchise tag on him in 2025, negotiations for a long-term agreement could provide the organization with more flexibility in terms of salary cap space to strengthen the team.

However, concerns about Tagovailoa's durability have emerged. In his final season at Alabama, he underwent surgery on his right ankle and suffered a hip injury that ended his college career prematurely. Additionally, he has experienced hand and rib injuries, as well as concussions during his time in the league.

The Dolphins, who faced salary cap constraints this offseason, made several cost-effective signings while losing key players. Nonetheless, securing Tagovailoa's future contract remains a priority for the team.

While Tagovailoa's absence from voluntary activities may raise questions about his commitment to the team, it is important to note that he did appear at the facilities earlier in the offseason. However, the extent of his absence and whether it extends into training camp remain uncertain. If his absence does continue, Tagovailoa could face fines of $40,000 per day, although it is possible that the Dolphins may reduce or waive the penalty.

As the Dolphins navigate negotiations with their young quarterback, they also face the challenge of balancing their roster-building efforts. The team has already picked up fifth-year options for players like Jaelan Phillips and Jaylen Waddle, and they want to extend safety Jevon Holland, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. The timing and outcome of Tagovailoa's contract negotiations may influence the team's ability to retain and add key pieces to their roster.

Quarterback contracts have seen a substantial increase in recent years, with players like Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes signing lucrative deals. Tagovailoa joins a group of quarterbacks, including Dak Prescott and Trevor Lawrence, who are also potentially in line for contract extensions this offseason.

As negotiations continue, the Dolphins remain focused on securing Tagovailoa's long-term commitment and ensuring he can lead the team to success on the field.
