In a series of back-to-back rallies in two states on Tuesday, former President Donald Trump took the opportunity to criticize President Joe Biden's immigration policies and made some alarming promises regarding his own agenda for the U.S.-Mexico border.

During an event in Wisconsin, Trump claimed that if undocumented migrants were found "invading" the homes of U.S. citizens, he would deport those citizens. This statement drew attention due to its similarity to the policies of far-right leaders who punished civilians for hiding Jews in their homes.

This promise could be seen as a direct attack on a controversial program recently announced by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's administration. The program offers $500 subsidies to households that volunteer to shelter refugees. Trump's statement suggests a conflicting stance on accepting refugees.

While some speculate that this statement may have been another verbal gaffe, it adds to the mounting evidence that Trump is losing his grip. Over the past few months, he has made inaccurate claims about millions of unknown immigrants arriving, mixed up prominent political figures, and described missile defense plans in a nonsensical manner.

Despite these questionable statements, Trump's campaign has successfully transformed immigration into a major issue for the upcoming elections. According to a March Gallup poll, 28 percent of Americans listed immigration as their top concern. Republican lawmakers have been influenced by Trump to refuse bipartisan border deals in order to prevent giving Biden a win on this issue.

Furthermore, Trump has fueled a standoff between Texas Governor Greg Abbott and the federal government regarding the placement of concertina wire along the Rio Grande section of the U.S.-Mexico border. These wire installations have hindered federal border agents from carrying out their duties.

The impact of Trump's immigration rhetoric has taken a toll on Biden, with polls indicating that immigration is his worst policy issue. The Washington Post reports that seven out of ten Americans disapprove of Biden's approach to immigration due to rising border crossings.

As the topic of immigration continues to dominate political discourse and shape public opinion, the battle over border policies is expected to remain a key theme leading up to the next election.
