The Trump campaign has filed an appeal against a ruling from an Illinois judge that removed former President Trump from the state's 2024 presidential ballot. Cook County Circuit Judge Tracie Porter had declared Trump disqualified from candidacy based on the Constitutional ban on "insurrectionists."

Last month, the Illinois Board of Elections had decided to keep Trump's name on the primary ballot after a group of Illinois voters accused him of engaging in insurrection. However, Porter reversed this decision, urging the board to remove Trump or nullify any votes cast for him, citing his alleged violation of section three of the 14th Amendment, known as the "disqualification clause" for insurrection.

The Trump campaign swiftly promised an appeal in response to Porter's ruling. The order is currently on hold pending litigation. It is worth noting that the U.S. Supreme Court is set to address the same question on the meaning and reach of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, rendering the ongoing court battle potentially moot.

Notably, Trump has not been charged with inciting an insurrection. However, he does face allegations of election interference in both Washington, D.C. and Georgia. The Associated Press reports that the court is expected to make a decision on whether Trump can be prosecuted for election interference by the end of June.

This is not the first time Trump has been removed from a state's ballot. Illinois now joins Colorado and Maine as the third state where he has been disqualified from the ballot. The former president's campaign is determined to fight this challenge, and the legal battle continues.

It remains to be seen how this appeal will be resolved and what impact it will have on Trump's potential candidacy in the upcoming 2024 presidential race. The outcome of the Supreme Court's upcoming case will likely shape the future interpretation of the Constitutional disqualification clause.
