In a recent development, Peter Navarro, an adviser to former President Donald Trump, has been denied his bid to delay his sentence and must now report to federal prison in Miami next week. The decision came from a panel of federal appeals court judges who ruled that Navarro had not presented substantial legal or factual questions likely to result in a reversal, a new trial, or a reduced sentence.
Navarro, who was sentenced to four months in federal prison earlier this year for defying the Jan. 6 committee, had sought to put his sentence on hold. However, the judges determined that Navarro had not provided enough evidence to support his request.
As his lawyers previously indicated, they may now seek to take the case to the Supreme Court. It remains to be seen whether they will pursue this avenue in an attempt to overturn the earlier ruling.
According to the filing, Navarro has been directed to report to the federal prison in Miami on March 19 by 2 p.m. His lawyers had requested the federal appeals court to stay his surrender date, but their request was denied.
Navarro's involvement in Trump's efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election led to his subpoena by the Jan. 6 committee in February 2022. However, he refused to provide testimony or the requested documents. The House committee released its report in December 2022, prior to Republican control of the House in January 2023.
During Navarro's sentencing in January, federal prosecutors highlighted his prioritization of politics over the country's well-being, comparing his actions to those of the rioters at the Capitol. They claimed that Navarro's allegiance to former President Donald Trump superseded his commitment to upholding the rule of law.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, presiding over Navarro's sentencing, conveyed that the adviser was not a victim and emphasized that he had received all the due process granted to him.
Stanley Woodward, Navarro's attorney, declined to comment on the recent ruling when reached by NBC News.
Navarro's scheduled imprisonment serves as a significant development in the ongoing fallout surrounding the events of January 6th and the efforts to investigate and hold individuals accountable for their actions.
