Tropical Storm Debby has formed in the Atlantic, becoming the fourth named storm of the hurricane season, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is expected to bring torrential rain and coastal flooding to much of Florida's Gulf Coast over the weekend. With hurricane warnings issued for parts of the state, residents are urged to take necessary precautions.

As of Saturday afternoon, Debby was located about 70 miles northwest of Havana, Cuba, and approximately 100 miles southwest of Key West, Florida. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and was moving northwest at 15 mph. Forecasters predict that Debby will continue to strengthen on its path towards the Florida Gulf Coast, potentially reaching hurricane strength before making landfall late Sunday night or Monday.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect for the Florida Gulf Coast from the Suwannee River to the Ochlockonee River. Wind and thunderstorms have already begun to spread across southern and central Florida, the Florida Keys, and the Bahamas. The National Hurricane Center warns of the potential for widespread heavy rain and flooding, with predictions of 5 to 10 inches of rainfall. Such rainfall can cause flash floods, overwhelm drainage systems, and pose a threat to rivers along Florida's West Coast.

The impact of Tropical Storm Debby is expected to extend beyond Florida. After crossing over northern Florida into the Atlantic Ocean, the system is likely to remain a tropical storm and pose a threat to Georgia and the Carolinas early next week. Forecasters also warn of the possibility of a stall or meandering motion along the southeastern United States, exacerbating the risks of heavy rainfall, storm surge, and strong winds.

Florida's flat terrain, coupled with already high water levels from king tides, increases the risk of flooding even on sunny days. The storm surge warning issued for the region includes areas such as Hernando Beach, Crystal River, Steinhatchee, and Cedar Key. In response, Citrus County officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation of coastal areas as a precautionary measure.

Residents along Florida's Gulf Coast are advised to stay updated on the latest weather alerts and follow any evacuation orders issued by local authorities. It is essential to prepare for the potential impact of Tropical Storm Debby, including securing loose objects, stocking up on supplies, and ensuring the safety of pets and loved ones.

As the storm approaches, it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to stay safe.
