Tropical Storm Beryl is rapidly gaining strength and is expected to intensify into a major hurricane as it heads towards the Caribbean islands. The storm, which currently has wind speeds of over 60 mph, is predicted to reach the Windward Islands, including Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Grenada, and the Grenadines, late on Sunday night or Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is projected to bring heavy rainfall, storm surges, and destructive winds to the region. Before reaching the Windward Islands, the storm is set to pass Barbados, where authorities have issued warnings about flash flooding and power outages.

To ensure preparedness, Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley urged residents to take necessary precautions and plan for the worst-case scenario. Hurricane watches have been put in place for a significant portion of the Caribbean, with the potential for additional watches as Beryl continues its path.

AccuWeather meteorologists predict that Beryl will become a hurricane once its winds reach a speed of 74 mph, which is expected to occur later on Saturday. In addition to the Caribbean islands, Jamaica and the Yucatán Peninsula in southeast Mexico, as well as portions of Belize and Guatemala, are advised to stay on high alert.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Roys emphasized the importance of being prepared for potential impacts in the coming week. While the storm's path may still change, proactive measures should be taken to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of local populations.

As Beryl intensifies, fears are rising of a busy storm season ahead. With the potential for further strengthening, there is a possibility that Beryl may become a Category 3 major hurricane, posing an even greater threat to the vulnerable Caribbean islands.

Residents and authorities in the affected regions are urged to closely monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center and follow any evacuation orders or safety guidelines issued.
