### Train Derailment in East Austin Causes Power Outage and Road Closures

Several train cars derailed early Tuesday morning in East Austin, causing significant disruptions in the area. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. near the intersection of East Sixth and Robert T. Martinez Jr. streets, according to the Austin Fire Department (AFD).

Out of the 90 cars that make up the train, seven derailed after the train hit an Austin Energy utility pole. Two of the derailed cars were carrying gravel, while the remaining five were empty. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there were no hazardous materials involved.

The derailment caused power outages affecting 82 Austin Energy customers, but power has since been restored. Several streets, including Sixth Street, Seventh Street, and Webberville Road, remain closed as crews work to clear the scene and repair the damaged utility infrastructure. Austin Energy, alongside CapMetro, is on-site assisting with the cleanup and removal of the impacted pole, which has been de-energized.

Public transportation services operated by CapMetro faced disruptions due to the crash, even though the derailed train was not a part of its fleet. Officials estimate that the train tracks will not be reopened until 5 p.m., advising drivers to avoid the area until further notice.

Initial emergency response to the crash involved AFD, the Austin Police Department, and the Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services (ATCEMS). As the work continues to clear the site, residents and commuters are urged to stay clear of the affected streets to ensure safety and smooth operations for the response teams.
