In a significant stride towards diversity in aviation, American Airlines hired David Harris in 1964, breaking the color barrier in commercial aviation. Harris, who had previously served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force flying B-52 bombers, made history by joining the airline. His remarkable career came to an end on March 8th when he passed away at the age of 89 in Marietta, Georgia.
American Airlines announced the sad news of Harris' passing and expressed their deep sadness at the loss. CEO Robert Isom referred to Harris as a trailblazer in aviation and credited him with inspiring numerous Black pilots to pursue their dreams of flying. Harris's impact on the industry went beyond his own accomplishments, as he played a pivotal role in opening doors for aspiring African American pilots.
Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Harris developed a fascination for airplanes at a young age. Alongside his brother, he would visit Lockbourne Air Force Base, where the renowned Tuskegee Airmen were stationed after World War II. This exposure to aviation left a lasting impression on him, shaping his future aspirations.
After serving in the military for six and a half years, Harris applied to several commercial airlines to pursue his dream of flying. However, only American Airlines responded to his application, as other airlines either rejected him or did not acknowledge his request. As a light-skinned African American with green eyes, Harris was often mistaken for being white. During his interview with American Airlines, he made it a point to clarify his racial identity, emphasizing his pride in his heritage.
Once established with American Airlines, Harris went on to become a mentor for aspiring African American pilots, both men and women, actively encouraging their pursuit of aviation careers. He believed in reaching back and helping others succeed, emphasizing the importance of leaving a meaningful legacy.
Harris's remarkable journey and accomplishments are highlighted in Michael Cottman's middle-grade book titled "Segregated Skies: David Harris's Trailblazing Journey to Rise Above Racial Barriers." The book chronicles his life and serves as a tribute to his groundbreaking achievements.
As the aviation industry mourns the loss of Captain David E. Harris, his legacy as a trailblazing pilot and mentor will continue to inspire future generations. His contributions to breaking down racial barriers in commercial aviation will forever be remembered, leaving an indelible mark on the history of flight.
