Driver Released from Custody After Fatal San Francisco Bus Stop Crash
San Francisco, CA - A driver involved in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of three family members and left an infant in critical condition has been released from custody, according to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department. Mary Fong Lau, 78, was initially taken into custody and faced charges including vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving.
The incident occurred on Saturday when Lau, behind the wheel of a white Mercedes SUV, collided with a bus stop at approximately 12:13 p.m. The victims, who were waiting to catch a bus to the San Francisco Zoo, were identified on Tuesday. Lau herself was injured in the crash and required hospitalization for treatment.
Authorities have stated that Lau was driving the wrong way on a divided highway and at an excessive speed at the time of the accident. The case now rests with the San Francisco District Attorney's office, which will determine whether or not to press charges against Lau.
While Lau's attorney confirmed that she remained in the hospital, they also stated that she was no longer in police custody. Once released from the hospital, Lau will be free to return home. The San Francisco Police Department, however, provided no further updates on the case at this time.
The release of Lau from custody has raised concerns among the community, as it comes shortly after the devastating loss of three lives and the severe injury of an infant. Many are anxiously waiting for the District Attorney's decision on potential charges against Lau.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. The affected family and the community at large continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones, and will undoubtedly seek justice for the lives lost.
