**Dartmouth Fraternity and Sorority Members Charged in Student's River Drowning Death**

Two students from Dartmouth College are facing charges following the tragic death of a fellow student who was discovered in a river after attending an off-campus party where underage drinking took place. Won Jang, a 20-year-old biomedical engineering student and member of Beta Alpha Omega fraternity, was found dead in July after attending the party hosted by the Alpha Phi sorority, according to the Hanover Police Department in New Hampshire.

Police reports indicate that most attendees, including Jang, were under 21 years old and consumed alcohol provided by Beta Alpha Omega members who were legally old enough to purchase it. Despite the large attendance, no one realized Jang was missing. It was revealed through several interviews, including with Jang's family, that he could not swim. An autopsy confirmed drowning as the cause of death, and his blood alcohol content was found to be .167, more than twice the legal limit for drivers over 21.

Jang, originally from Middletown, Delaware, was a dedicated student immersed in his studies and active in the college community. Scott Brown, dean of the college, commended Jang’s enthusiasm for seizing academic and personal opportunities at Dartmouth.

Following Jang’s death, two members of Beta Alpha Omega fraternity were charged with misdemeanors for providing alcohol to minors. Similarly, Alpha Phi sorority faces a misdemeanor charge for facilitating an underage drinking event. In response to the incident, Dartmouth College suspended both organizations and launched an internal investigation. The suspensions remain in place pending the investigation’s outcome and conduct review.

Dartmouth College expressed its continued commitment to the positive role of Greek organizations in student life, emphasizing the necessity for these groups to adhere to their values and standards. The institution underscored the responsibility of all community members to maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment on campus.
