In a heartbreaking turn of events, the six-month-old baby, Caue, who was involved in a devastating SUV crash in San Francisco over the weekend, has succumbed to his injuries, according to officials. The accident, which took place when a 78-year-old woman allegedly drove her SUV into a bus stop while going the wrong way, had already claimed the lives of Caue's parents and older brother.
Caue's father, Diego Cardoso de Oliveria, who was working as an associate creative director for Apple, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with his one-year-old son, Joaquin. The mother, Mathilde, tragically passed away in an area hospital the following day.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that members of the close-knit Brazilian-Portuguese family made the difficult decision to donate Caue's organs. Supervisor Myrna Melgar, representing the area, revealed this during a press conference.
In the wake of this devastating incident, mourners gathered at a vigil held in West Portal to honor the family. San Francisco Mayor London Breed, visibly moved, described the crash as "heartbreaking" and placed flowers at the memorial.
Meanwhile, the suspected driver of the SUV, identified as Mary Fong Lau, has been arrested on multiple felony charges, including three counts of vehicular manslaughter. Additional charges include driving the wrong way, reckless driving, and driving at an unsafe speed. Lau, who was also hospitalized following the accident, is said to be cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Lau's attorney released a statement to KTVU, expressing condolences and asking for privacy for Lau and her family during this difficult time. The attorney emphasized that they join the community in mourning the tragic loss of life as authorities continue their investigation into the crash.
The news of Caue's passing has further deepened the sorrow felt by the community over this devastating accident. As the investigation unfolds, support and condolences pour in for the grieving family, and the community grapples with the profound loss of innocent lives.
