Tragic Boating Accident Claims Life of "Wicked Tuna" Captain on Outer Banks
Captain Charlie "Griff" Griffin, known for his appearance on the popular show "Wicked Tuna Outer Banks," tragically lost his life in a boating accident on the Outer Banks. The incident occurred on March 4, 2024, near Oregon Inlet, when Griffin's boat went missing. A person who was with him on the boat remains missing.
The Coast Guard was alerted to the situation around 11:35 p.m. on Sunday when they received a report about two overdue boaters traveling from Virginia Beach to Wanchese for repairs. The last communication with those on the boat was at approximately 6:15 p.m. Sunday. The Coast Guard, along with local first responders, immediately launched a search operation along the oceanfront between Nags Head and Rodanthe.
Tragically, the boat was discovered south of Oregon Inlet, approximately 70 yards off the shore, engulfed in rough waters. An "unresponsive person" was found in the same area, along with a deceased dog. The person was declared dead by a medical examiner. Despite extensive efforts, the other person aboard the boat had not been found as of Monday evening, but the search was planned to continue overnight.
