In the wake of Paris Saint-Germain's monumental triumph in the Champions League, celebrations across France turned deadly, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving a police officer in a coma, according to French authorities on Sunday.
Amid the nationwide jubilation for PSG's historic win, a 17-year-old was fatally stabbed during a street party in Dax following the Saturday night match held in Munich. Additionally, a man lost his life in Paris when his scooter was struck by a car amid the celebratory chaos. Both incidents are currently under investigation.
In Coutance, located in northwest France, a police officer suffered severe eye injuries after being accidentally struck by fireworks and has been placed in an artificial coma, the national police service reported.
Despite the widespread excitement, the celebrations were marred by pockets of violence, leading to the arrests of hundreds. The festivities primarily remained peaceful but saw moments of unrest, notably requiring law enforcement intervention. On the Champs-Élysées, in anticipation of public disturbances, security forces utilized a water cannon to secure the Place de l'Étoile near the Arc de Triomphe after fans attempted to breach police barriers.
By early Sunday, police had detained 294 individuals, including 30 people involved in looting a shoe shop on the famed avenue. Additionally, two vehicles were set ablaze near the Parc des Princes stadium.
The Place de la Bastille witnessed a different scene, filled with exuberant fans singing, dancing, and setting off flares at the base of its famous column. Motorbikes revved loudly in celebration, completing laps around the column to the cheers of onlookers. The atmosphere was described as jubilant and tension-free, with no police presence and plenty of voices joining in song well past midnight.
To manage potential post-match unrest, authorities had preemptively escalated security measures, deploying 5,400 police officers throughout key areas of Paris and its suburbs.
The team, fresh off their historic 5-0 victory over Inter Milan, was expected to partake in a victory parade on the Champs-Élysées on Sunday.
