The incident took place in the 9400 block on East Washington Street at a bar where two off-duty uniformed officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were working.
According to Chief Christopher Bailey, a disturbance erupted in the bar's parking lot at around 1:30 a.m., leading to a confrontation between the officers and at least one suspect. Both officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, resulting in one officer being shot in the upper thigh and suffering an additional shoulder injury, possibly due to falling after being shot. However, Chief Bailey reported that the injured officer is in stable condition and is expected to be released from the hospital on Sunday.
Upon responding to the scene, additional officers discovered four other individuals in the parking lot who had also been shot. The victims, two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man, and a 33-year-old woman, were quickly transported to nearby hospitals. Luckily, their injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.
Shortly after the incident, a man arrived at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the man tragically succumbed to his injuries. Detectives believe that he was connected to the shooting, but his identity has not been released pending notification of his next of kin by the Marion County Coroner's Office.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a gun in the parking lot. The exact cause of the initial disturbance remains unknown, but investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage in hope of shedding light on the incident.
The Indianapolis community is left shocked and grieving as they come to terms with the loss of life and the injuries sustained during this tragic event. The police department is committed to bringing justice to those involved and ensuring the safety of its residents.
