Toyota Unveils 2025 4Runner with First Makeover in 15 Years and New Hybrid Powertrain

Toyota has unveiled the highly anticipated 2025 4Runner, marking the SUV's first full makeover in 15 years. The new 4Runner comes with a revamped design, improved cabin technology, and most notably, a new hybrid powertrain.
The 2025 4Runner boasts an all-new platform, which it shares with the new Tacoma pickup, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser SUVs. This new frame not only enhances strength and rigidity but also promises to enhance overall comfort and handling. The vehicle's predecessor was criticized for its outdated cabin technology and cramped interior with poor sightlines, but the new body is expected to address these shortcomings.
Under the hood, the base engine of the new 4Runner is a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine known as the i-Force, offering 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft of torque. This engine surpasses the outgoing V6 in power and is anticipated to provide better fuel economy. Toyota has not disclosed EPA mileage estimates for the new powertrains.
However, the most exciting addition is Toyota's mild hybrid engine, the i-Force Max. This turbo 4-cylinder engine is combined with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into the eight-speed transmission, producing an impressive 326 hp and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Toyota claims this powertrain is the most potent ever offered on the 4Runner. The i-Force Max hybrid powertrain is available on select trims and standard on higher-end models such as the TRD Pro, Trailhunter, and Platinum.
Both engine options come paired with a modern eight-speed automatic transmission, an improvement over the previous model's five-speed automatic.
According to iSeeCars analyst Karl Brauer, Toyota has recognized the growing demand for capable off-road vehicles, and the new 4Runner reflects this. The updated platform offers a smooth and comfortable ride for daily use while maintaining exceptional off-road and towing capabilities.
Toyota believes that hybrid powertrains, like the one featured in the 4Runner, not only enhance performance and efficiency but also serve as a bridge towards full electrification. Hybrid vehicles require fewer expensive materials and smaller battery packs, making them a more viable option for consumers. This technology aligns with the government's new lowered emissions standards for 2032.
Jack Hollis, executive vice president and head of Toyota Motor Sales US, highlighted the cost-saving benefits of hybrid technology during the recent New York Auto Show. By utilizing hybrid technology, Toyota can make more efficient use of expensive battery materials and reduce the costs of vehicle production. Hollis stated that for the same amount of resources needed to build one battery electric vehicle, Toyota can manufacture six plug-in hybrids, saving significant amounts of CO2 emissions and costing $6,000 to $8,000 less per vehicle.
While Toyota has not disclosed pricing for the new 4Runner, it is expected to be in a similar range as the outgoing model, which started at $40,705. With the added advantage of Toyota's current hybrid technology and improved fuel economy, the 2025 4Runner is anticipated to garner significant interest from consumers and expand its already established fan base.
