In a groundbreaking move, the Toronto Raptors have reached an agreement with franchise star Scottie Barnes on a maximum rookie contract extension worth an astounding $224.89 million over five years. The news broke on Monday at 12:27 PM ET, catching many by surprise as such announcements are usually kept under wraps until the "legal tampering" window opens.
Thanks to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), teams are now allowed to negotiate with their own free agents immediately after the conclusion of the NBA Finals. This presented an opportunity for the Raptors and Barnes to secure the deal before the NBA Draft and the start of free agency, with the official signing set for July 6th.
At just 22 years old, Barnes has made significant strides in his three seasons in the NBA, exhibiting remarkable performances across various statistical categories. He averaged 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 1.5 blocks, and 1.7 three-pointers, an unprecedented achievement in NBA history. While an unfortunate late-season hand injury limited Barnes to 22 missed games, his stellar performance earned him a well-deserved All-Star selection.
The contract may also include clauses that activate the "Rose Rule" if Barnes makes an All-NBA team, wins the Defensive Player of the Year award, or becomes the league MVP in the upcoming season. In that scenario, the contract's value could potentially escalate to a staggering $270 million. However, if it remains a standard rookie maximum extension or Barnes fails to secure an All-NBA spot, the contract is expected to begin at $38.8 million and increase annually until reaching $51.2 million in the 2029-2030 season.
Currently in the final year of his rookie contract, Barnes will earn $10.13 million this season as the fourth overall pick. However, his salary will experience a significant jump in his fifth season, eventually making him the highest-paid player in the history of the Toronto Raptors.
Looking ahead, the Raptors may turn their focus towards securing a new contract for Immanuel Quickley, a restricted free agent this summer. Additionally, the NBA Draft, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, as well as the commencement of free agency next Monday, promise to be crucial milestones for the team.
As the Raptors make this historic commitment to Scottie Barnes, they have undoubtedly solidified their belief in his talent and potential. With a record-breaking contract in hand, Barnes will seek to lead the Raptors to further success on the court in the upcoming seasons.
