### Aspinall Eyes Historic Showdown with Jon Jones After UFC 309
Tom Aspinall has set his sights on a monumental clash with Jon Jones, aspiring to create the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history. Holding the interim heavyweight title since November 2023, the British fighter has been eager for a showdown with Jones but has had to wait while Jones faced Stipe Miocic.
On Saturday night at UFC 309, Jones delivered a dominant performance, finishing Miocic in the third round with a brutal spinning back kick to the body. As the fight concluded, Aspinall couldn't help but envision sharing the octagon with the reigning champion, sensing that the UFC might be planning something big.
“When Jon Jones was giving his speech, I was directly looking at UFC officials, Dana [White] and Hunter [Campbell],” Aspinall shared on the UFC 309 post-fight show. “Both of them turned to me, pointed, and winked. To me, that signals something major is in the works.”
Aspinall firmly believes a fight with Jon Jones is the match the fans, the UFC, and the sport need. "This is the biggest fight in the UFC," he stated. "It's what everyone wants to see, and it's what has to happen now."
Jones, however, mentioned that his decision to fight again would largely depend on the compensation, hinting at a potential retirement even though his legacy is already well cemented. Aspinall acknowledges Jones' unparalleled career but is confident that a fight between them would be beneficial for both sides.
“I did speak with the UFC executives and plan to talk more. From my viewpoint, which might be a bit biased, this is the biggest heavyweight fight in UFC history,” Aspinall reiterated. “It's what the people want to see.”
Reflecting on UFC 309, Aspinall wasn't surprised by the night's outcome. He admired Jones' ability to secure a knockout and noted that Miocic showed signs of rust after a long hiatus from the sport. Jones executed his strategy flawlessly against Miocic, who, now at 42, seemed to lack the sharp reactions needed to counter Jones' diverse attacks.
“It played out just as I thought it would,” Aspinall said. "Jones dominated with a mix of strikes and wrestling. To beat him, one needs quick reactions and sharp eyes, which Miocic appeared to lack."
Aspinall aims to capitalize on the insights gained from watching Jones live for the first time, confident that he can find openings in Jones' defense. “I've identified some opportunities. Whether I can exploit them or not remains to be seen, but I believe I can,” he concluded.
As the MMA world watches closely, fans and analysts alike hope to see these two titans face off in a historic bout that could redefine the landscape of the heavyweight division.
