In a high-intensity game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, the longstanding rivalry reached a boiling point in the fifth inning, causing both benches to clear. The incident occurred after a pitch from Dodgers pitcher Gavin Stone narrowly missed hitting San Diego's Jurickson Profar.
Stone had been on a roll, retiring the first 13 batters he faced, when Profar stepped up to the plate. With the count at one ball, one strike, Profar showed bunt, and on the very next pitch, Stone threw a 92 mph fastball up and in. This prompted an immediate reaction from Profar, who exchanged words with Dodgers catcher Will Smith before players from both teams rushed onto the field.
Fortunately, the situation quickly deescalated, and after a few tense moments, play resumed without any further incident. It was apparent that the tension between these NL West rivals had reached a tipping point.
The rivalry between the Dodgers and Padres has been intensifying in recent years, fueled by key postseason matchups. In 2020, the Dodgers eliminated the Padres in the NL Division Series en route to winning the World Series. Two years later, the Padres got their revenge by knocking the Dodgers out of the NLDS.
When asked about the incident, Profar speculated that Stone's pitch might have been in retaliation for his bunt attempt. However, Stone himself admitted uncertainty, leaving the intention behind the pitch open to interpretation.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts defended his pitcher's actions, emphasizing the importance of being able to throw inside. He clarified that in a one-run ballgame with one out, it would be highly improbable for the pitcher to intentionally hit a batter.
Stone's no-hit bid was halted in the sixth inning when he issued a walk to Tyler Wade, finally allowing the Padres their first baserunner of the game. Shortly after, Kyle Higashioka ended Stone's hopes of a no-hitter with a clean single.
Profar downplayed the incident, stating that it was merely a heated moment and not an attempt to energize his team. Padres manager Mike Shildt expressed support for Profar's reaction, stating that it was understandable to take exception to a tight pitch.
While the benches did not escalate the situation further, tensions remain high between the two teams. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how this intense rivalry continues to play out on the field.
