In a move to protect the rights and creativity of musical artists, Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee has signed into law the Ensuring Likeness, Voice, and Image Security (ELVIS) Act. The signing took place on Thursday at a honky-tonk bar in Nashville, adding an extra touch of authenticity to the occasion.
During the event, Governor Lee acknowledged that while artificial intelligence (AI) has its benefits, it can also pose a threat when it falls into the wrong hands. "It can rob an individual, these individual artists to whose unique God-given gifts transform people's lives," he expressed. "It can steal those gifts, it can impersonate those gifts, it can subsequently create fake works that rob those artists of their intellectual property."
The ELVIS Act, named in honor of the iconic singer Elvis Presley, aims to address concerns over the exploitation of artists' likeness and intellectual property, which have become prevalent in the wake of advances in AI technology. Following the death of Elvis Presley, his image and likeness were widely misused without permission, highlighting the need for legislation to safeguard artists.
Musical artists spanning various genres have expressed concerns about the growing popularity of AI and its ability to replicate their voices and create synthetic songs. Some AI programs have even gone so far as to compose entire songs in the style of specific artists, using an analysis of their existing music catalog. However, the quality of these AI-generated songs varies significantly.
The ELVIS Act is a significant step towards protecting the rights and interests of musical artists in Tennessee. It solidifies their ability to control how their talents are used and ensures that their intellectual property remains theirs alone. By enacting this legislation, the governor and the state of Tennessee are actively combating the exploitative potential of AI technology, while still recognizing the positive aspects it can bring to the industry.
As the ELVIS Act comes into effect, artists in Tennessee can now rest assured that their unique God-given talents and works will be safeguarded from unauthorized replication and exploitation. With this legislation in place, the state is signaling its commitment to supporting and preserving the rich cultural tapestry and musical legacy that define Tennessee.
