Scott Munro, who had dedicated nearly three decades to the Evergreen School District in Washington, was left paralyzed and unable to speak when his oxygen levels plummeted during orthopedic shoulder surgery on September 18, 2023.

According to his family, Munro experienced a harrowing four minutes of neglect before suffering significant brain damage, ultimately resulting in a coma. He spent a grueling month in the intensive care unit and had to undergo extensive physical therapy to relearn basic functions like walking and talking.

Remarkably, Munro's journey to recovery led him from Chicago to Omaha, Nebraska, where he battled to regain mobility and communication. On Tuesday, he received a heartwarming welcome at Portland International Airport from friends and family, marking his triumphant return to Oregon.

Accompanied by his wife, Katrina, and daughter, Katherine, Munro expressed gratitude to the supportive community that rallied behind him, stating, "It's because of all these people, more than anything else." Overwhelmed by love and encouragement, the family has raised over $98,000 through a GoFundMe campaign aimed at covering medical expenses, travel, transportation, and necessary modifications to their home to cater to Munro's needs.

As Munro settles back into his everyday life, he will temporarily reside in an assisted living facility until his family home is fully adapted to accommodate his condition. Reflecting on the ordeal, Katrina emphasized the importance of uncovering what went wrong during her husband's surgery. She maintained, "We know something went wrong in the O.R. that day. Someone or some machine...was not doing its job."
