The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have some key absences when they take on the Detroit Lions this Sunday. Coach Todd Bowles announced on Friday that three starters, including first-round draft pick Calijah Kancey, All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr., and right tackle Luke Goedeke, will be sidelined. Additionally, reserve cornerback Josh Hayes will also miss the game.
The Buccaneers received a blow in their defensive line as Kancey injured his left calf during a practice on September 6th. Winfield sprained his right foot and ankle during last Sunday's game against the Commanders. Meanwhile, Goedeke suffered a concussion and Hayes sustained an ankle injury. Their absence will no doubt be felt on the field.
Bowles also provided updates on the availability of other players. Starting cornerback Zyon McCollum, who left the season opener with a concussion, has been practicing all week but still needs to clear the concussion protocol. McCollum's clearance deadline is Saturday, giving him a chance to feature in the game. Additionally, starting defensive end Logan Hall, who missed the last match due to a foot injury, is listed as questionable.
The Buccaneers are dealing with additional setbacks as starting nickelback Tykee Smith missed Thursday and Friday's practice sessions due to illness. Bowles stated that Smith's condition will be assessed on game day to determine his availability.
With the absence of Winfield, Christian Izien is expected to start at safety/nickelback. Izien previously filled in as outside cornerback during the second half of last week's game. However, if Smith is also unable to play, the team may deploy Izien at nickelback and utilize Kaevon Merriweather at safety. Another option could be veteran Tavierre Thomas lining up at nickelback.
Despite the challenges presented by the injuries, Bowles remains confident in his players. He acknowledged that every player will face difficulties at some point and sees this as an opportunity for young and backup players to gain valuable experience.
Last season, the Lions emerged victorious in both matchups against the Buccaneers, including a 31-23 win in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs. Tampa Bay will be seeking redemption as they face their familiar adversaries on Sunday.
It remains to be seen how the absence of key starters will impact the Buccaneers' performance. However, the team is determined to make the most of their available resources and continue their pursuit of victory.
