Supporters of Nex Benedict congregated outside Owasso High School on Monday morning in a display of solidarity for policy changes and an end to bullying in schools. The rally, organized by current Owasso students and alumni, began around 9 a.m., with some students choosing to walk out of school at 9:45 to join the demonstration. Signs with messages such as "Don't Stand By, Stand Up" could be seen among the protesters.
Owasso Public Schools sent a letter to families on Sunday after learning about the potential student walkout, indicating that the event was not district-sponsored and not held on school property. Students participating in the walkout faced being marked absent, a standard procedure that would require clearance from a parent or guardian.
Although the district did not disclose the number of absent students, a friend of Nex Benedict shared their experiences with News On 6, shedding light on the movement's narrative over the previous month. Meanwhile, Owasso police were present at the rally to ensure peace, though some shouting matches occurred with at least one counter-protester on the scene.
Owasso Public Schools expressed willingness to collaborate with students seeking to assemble, offering guidance and assistance to ensure their safety. Counselors remain available to offer support to students and staff on a daily basis, highlighting the district's commitment to mental and emotional well-being within the school community.
