Sunset Boulevard Wins Big at the 2022 Olivier Awards

In a star-studded ceremony held at London's Royal Albert Hall, the winners of this year's Olivier Awards with Mastercard were announced. The event, hosted by Hannah Waddingham, showcased the best talent and performances in London's theater scene. The highlights package of the awards ceremony will be broadcast on ITV1 at 10.10 pm and will be available for streaming on BritBox in North America, Canada, and Australia.

The standout winner of the night was the musical Sunset Boulevard, which took home an impressive seven awards. The production, featuring a stellar cast, including Tom Francis and Nicole Scherzinger, won both Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical. It also secured the award for Best Musical Revival.

Jamie Lloyd was honored with the prestigious Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director for his exceptional work on Sunset Boulevard. Additionally, Jack Knowles won the White Light Award for Best Lighting Design, while Alan Williams received the Outstanding Musical Contribution award for his musical supervision and direction. Adam Fisher's outstanding sound design in the production earned him the d&b audiotechnik Award for Best Sound Design.

The evening kicked off with an enchanting performance by Hannah Waddingham, who sang 'Anything Goes' from the musical of the same name. Other notable performances throughout the night included nominees for Mastercard Best New Musical: The Little Big Things, Next To Normal, Operation Mincemeat, and A Strange Loop. The esteemed musical revivals Guys & Dolls and Hadestown, as well as the winner Sunset Boulevard, also graced the stage. In a special moment, Groundhog Day Australia delivered a captivating performance.

Among other winners, Operation Mincemeat was awarded Mastercard Best New Musical for its outstanding contributions by David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts. Jak Malone took home the award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for his performance in Operation Mincemeat.

The highly coveted Olivier Awards for Best Actor and Best Actress went to Mark Gatiss for his role in The Motive And The Cue and Sarah Snook for her remarkable West End debut performance in The Picture Of Dorian Gray.

Amy Trigg was recognized as the Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for her portrayal of Agnes in The Little Big Things. Vanya, adapted by Simon Stephens and performed at the Duke Of York's Theatre, won the Cunard Best Revival award. Arlene Phillips, last year's Special Award winner, returned to accept the Gillian Lynne Award for Best Theatre Choreographer alongside James Cousins for their work on Guys & Dolls.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow by Kate Trefry at the Phoenix Theatre received two awards, the Noël Coward Award for Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play, and the Blue-i Theatre Technology Award for Best Set Design, which went to Miriam Buether for her set design and 59 Productions for video design.

The Bush Theatre's production Sleepova by Matilda Feyiṣayọ secured the Unusual Rigging Award for Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre, while the TAIT Award for Best New Opera Production went to Innocence by the Royal Opera at the Royal Opera House.

Isabela Coracy won the Outstanding Achievement in Dance award for her performance in NINA: By Whatever Means, part of Cassa Pancho's Ballet Black: Pioneers at the Barbican Theatre. Gabriela Carrizo's La Ruta, part of Nederlands Dans Theater - NDT 1 at Sadler's Wells, was awarded Best New Dance Production.

Antonio Pappano was recognized for his role as Music Director of the Royal Opera House and received the Outstanding Achievement in Opera award in his final year in the position.

The ceremony also paid tribute to industry giants who passed away, including Haydn Gwynne, who was honored posthumously and won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for When Winston Went to War with The Wireless. A touching tribute from Gwynne's children highlighted her immense talent and revered status as both an artist and a mother.

The National Theatre closed the ceremony with a special performance commemorating its 60th anniversary. Joseph Fiennes reprised his role as Gareth Southgate in Dear England, which won The Londoner Award for Best New Play. The performance featured a star-studded cast, including Janie Dee, Adrian Lester, Meera Syal, Callum Scott Howells, and Fra Fee, along with a choir of 30 National Theatre alumni performers. The celebration showcased the rich history and impact of the National Thetre, concluding with a powerful rendition of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' from the musical Carousel.

Eleanor Lloyd, President of SOLT, expressed her gratitude and praised the immense talent and contribution of all the winners and nominees, emphasizing the strength of London's theater industry.
