Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, known for his groundbreaking research on black holes and the nature of the universe, had issued a somber warning to humanity regarding the potential risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI) before his passing in 2018. In several instances, Hawking expressed concerns that the development of full AI could have devastating consequences for the human race.

As far back as 2014, Hawking addressed the emerging field of AI in an interview with the BBC, stressing that its development could potentially signal the end of human existence. His keen foresight led him to theorize that AI, once it attains human-level intelligence, could rapidly evolve and redesign itself at an exponential rate, surpassing human capabilities. Hawking noted that due to biological limitations, humans would be unable to compete with AI's rapid progress and, consequently, would be surpassed.

Hawking was so concerned about the dangers of unmonitored AI development that in 2015, he joined over 100 experts in signing an open letter to the United Nations, urging them to take heed of the potential risks associated with AI. The following year, Hawking spoke to Wired magazine, expressing his fear that AI could eventually replace humans altogether.

In his posthumously-published book, Brief Answers to the Big Questions, Hawking expounded further on the potential threat posed by AI. He warned that humankind may face an "intelligence explosion" where machines' intelligence would far surpass our own, likening it to the intelligence gap between humans and snails.

Hawking's words serve as a profound reminder that the idea of highly intelligent machines, once dismissed as mere science fiction, must be taken seriously. He argued that neglecting the potential risks associated with AI could become humanity's gravest mistake. While AI holds immense promise in various fields, the need for robust ethical guidelines and careful monitoring of its development becomes increasingly apparent.

Although Hawking's warning about AI may be unsettling, his call to action serves as a timely reminder that the choices we make today regarding the development and implementation of AI will shape the future of humanity. It is a responsibility that should be approached with great caution, ensuring that AI technology is used to benefit society while safeguarding against any potential existential threats.
