A spring storm is making its way into central New York today, bringing a mix of unsettled weather that is expected to continue through the end of the week. According to meteorologist Sam Postich, moderate to periods of heavy rain are possible today, with temperatures hovering around the mid to low 40s during the daytime. However, it is too warm for snow initially.
Widespread rainfall totals are expected to reach between 1-2" for the majority of the region, with some localized areas receiving slightly more. Syracuse, in particular, could record over 1.08" of rain, making it the rainiest day of the year so far.
Along with the rain, strong winds are also anticipated to develop this afternoon. The National Weather Service has issued Wind Advisories for northern counties, as gusts could reach 60+mph. In Syracuse, the maximum wind gusts could reach 45mph. These strong winds have the potential to cause tree limb damage and downed power lines. The strongest winds are expected between 12pm and 6pm tonight.
Winter weather advisories have been issued for eastern counties from 2pm this afternoon until 8am Friday. The advisories are due to moderate snowfall, gusty winds, and the possibility of a glaze of ice in some areas. Lower elevations of central New York are likely to receive 1-3" of snow, with heavier accumulation on colder surfaces. Roads may briefly become snow-covered during the heaviest periods, but wet and slushy roads are more likely as temperatures will barely reach freezing tonight.
Thursday will see continued light snow, adding an additional trace to 1" across the area, with slightly more in some localized higher elevation spots. Lingering lake effect snow flurries are expected on Friday and Saturday, but the latter half of the weekend is anticipated to be clear, with warmer temperatures.
Despite the current unsettled weather, central New York can expect partly cloudy skies for the upcoming eclipse, with dry and warm conditions.
As the storm continues to impact central New York, residents are advised to stay informed about the changing weather conditions and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
