As winter grips the northeastern United States, health officials are sounding the alarm on a surge of norovirus cases causing discomfort and distress. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that since mid-December, over 1 in 10 individuals exhibiting symptoms of the stomach bug have tested positive for the highly contagious norovirus. The statistics paint a concerning picture, with the rolling three-week average of norovirus positive tests climbing to 13.4% in the northeast region. This figure marks the highest percentage among the four regions monitored by the CDC, with rates remaining above 13% for the third consecutive week.
Furthermore, the national landscape is also experiencing a significant uptick in norovirus cases. Compared to previous years, there has been a notable increase of more than 16% in reported instances of the virus across the country. The rise in infections is a cause for heightened vigilance among public health officials and underscores the importance of practicing good hygiene and preventative measures to curb the spread of this unpleasant and pervasive illness.
