Spencer Lee Secures Spot in Tokyo Olympics, Zain Retherford Looks to Bounce Back at World Olympic Games Qualifier

In an impressive display of skill and dominance, Spencer Lee has officially qualified for the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team that will compete in Paris, France this August. Competing at the 2024 World Olympic Games Qualifier in Istanbul, Turkey, the 25-year-old wrestler from Iowa City, Iowa, secured one of the three remaining Olympic quotas in the 57 kg men's freestyle weight class.

Lee's path to victory was marked by four dynamic wins, three of which ended in technical falls. In an astounding display of speed and technique, Lee dispatched his opponents with finish times of 22, 53, and 35 seconds. Notably, he delivered a resounding 10-0 defeat to Rakhat Kalzhan of Kazakhstan, a two-time Asian Championships medalist, in the qualifying bout.

Having dominated the age-group World Championships from 2014 to 2016, winning gold medals in the U17 and U20 divisions, Lee's journey to the Olympics was a long-awaited milestone. Prioritizing his collegiate career at the University of Iowa, where he became a three-time NCAA champion and two-time Dan Hodge Trophy winner, Lee returned to the international circuit last November and has remained unbeaten with an 18-0 record.

On the other hand, Zain Retherford, Lee's teammate in the men's freestyle division, faced a setback in his quest for an Olympic quota. After an impressive start with two convincing wins, including a punishing fall over Stefan Coman of Romania and a dominant 11-0 victory against Ibrahim Guzan of Yemen, Retherford fell short in the round-of-16 against Tulga Tumur Ochir of Mongolia. Despite holding the lead late in the match, Retherford was defeated 7-2 when Tumur Ochir executed a four-point takedown with only 30 seconds remaining.

However, Retherford still has an opportunity to clinch an Olympic quota as he enters the repechage rounds. To secure his ticket to Paris, he must win four matches, beginning with his first opponent, Alibeg Alibegov of Bahrain. If successful in defeating Alibegov and his subsequent opponents, Retherford will face the winner from the other side of the bracket in a high-stakes Olympic qualifying match.

The World Olympic Games Qualifier, which is being held in Istanbul, Turkey, will continue with the men's freestyle repechage on Sunday. The bronze medal matches and the true-bronze Olympic qualifying bouts will follow. Wrestling enthusiasts can catch the event live on Flowrestling.com, while brackets and real-time results will be available on UWW Arena.

Lee's qualification for the Tokyo Olympics marks a significant achievement in his career, as he will represent the United States in the 57 kg men's freestyle category. Meanwhile, Retherford remains resolute in his pursuit of an Olympic quota, fueled by the motivation to bounce back from his recent defeat. Wrestling fans eagerly anticipate the outcome of these thrilling matches and the potential showdown between Lee and Aman Aman of India in Paris.
