A 5.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey (U.S.G.S), sending tremors across the region. The temblor struck at 9:09 p.m. Pacific time, approximately 14 miles southwest of Lamont, Calif., as data from the agency revealed. While further analysis by seismologists is underway, the reported magnitude may be subject to revision.

The U.S.G.S has indicated that the earthquake's impact may be felt beyond the areas shown on the shake-severity map, which only displays regions with a shake intensity of 4 or greater, categorized as "light" by the U.S.G.S. Consequently, additional data collected about the earthquake could prompt scientists to update this map.

Aftershocks, which are smaller earthquakes following a larger one in the same general area, have been reported in the wake of the initial quake. These aftershocks are typically minor adjustments occurring along the portion of a fault that experienced slippage during the primary earthquake.

It is important to note that aftershocks can occur within days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake. These subsequent seismic events can be of equal or greater magnitude, potentially exacerbating the damage already inflicted on affected locations.

The U.S.G.S continues to monitor the situation closely and recommends that residents in Southern California remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks. It is essential to take necessary precautions to ensure the safety and well-being of oneself and others during such events.

As of Wednesday, August 7 at 12:36 a.m. Eastern time, the obtained shake data, based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity scale, indicates the severity of the earthquake. Aftershock data, recorded until Wednesday, August 7 at 2:40 p.m. Eastern time, includes earthquakes occurring within a 100-mile radius and within seven days of the initial quake.

Authorities urge residents to stay informed through official channels, follow safety guidelines, and be prepared in the event of any future seismic activity.
