Former President Donald Trump's $399 gold sneakers were the subject of ridicule on a recent episode of Saturday Night Live. Host Shane Gillis starred in a trailer parodying the 1992 sports comedy White Men Can't Jump, titled White Men Can Trump, which showcased a character who receives a pair of "Never Surrender High-Tops" from Trump. The sneakers, described as shiny gold high tops with an American flag detail, have sold out on a limited-edition release and are now being resold for thousands of dollars.
The parody trailer poked fun at Trump's baseless claims about the 2020 election being stolen, as the character in the trailer uses the magical sneakers to make people believe he is good at basketball. The trailer humorously depicts the character leveraging the shoes to manipulate situations in his favor, resembling Trump's appearance and mannerisms in the process.
Trump, facing legal challenges and financial penalties, announced the sneakers at Sneaker Con shortly after being ordered to pay $355 million in fines, plus interest, for misleading financial statements. He was also recently ordered to pay $83.3 million for defamation, adding to a previous $5 million sexual assault and defamation verdict. The website selling the gold sneakers describes them as a collector's item, with only 1,000 pairs made, aimed at go-getters with a strong and resilient spirit.
The parody trailer on SNL highlighted the satire around Trump's political ambitions and legal battles, providing a humorous take on the former president's controversial persona and the extravagant gold sneakers that have captured attention in the market.
